WE NEED COACHES. No previous coaching or rugby experience is required. We are just looking for a few good men and women that have a burning desire to have a positive and ever-lasting impact on the youth in your community. You also need to be able to commit some time and energy. But the rewards are priceless. For your local Club please click on Club location button in the About Rugby NorCal drop down menu, and find the closest Club to your home or office. If you would like to start a Club please contact firstname.lastname@example.org we can assist.
The rugby season runs from January through April, and into May for High School Divisions that make the Playoffs. It is a perfect winter sport that generally falls in between football and baseball. The matches for High School are generally on Friday evenings or Saturdays and for Middle School and Youth on Saturday or Sundays. Practices vary from Club to Club, but are generally once or twice a week in the evenings. During the season you can expect to spend between 8 and 12 hours coaching and traveling, depending on your level of commitment and your role in the Club.
We want to thank all of the Coaches on the list below and congratulate them on taking the important step to legitimizing the sport of rugby.
Coaches are responsible for annually maintaining their “active” coaching status. Every team requires an “active” coach in order to be considered “in compliance.” You can maintain “active” status by annually completing 10 Professional Development Credits.
USA Rugby has mandated that EVERY coach complete at least 10 PDC's every season in order to maintain their active status. To find a listing of professional development courses and opportunities, please click here:

Under the new coaching structure every coach, regardless of their background is responsible for completing the following requirements in order to have an “active” standing with USA Rugby. If you want guaranteed liability coverage than your team needs to be considered “in compliance”. Having a registered and “active” coach is one of the 3 requirements for a team to be considered “in compliance”.
A coach is considered “active” for the membership cycle when they complete the following (for detailed instructions on how to complete each step just click on the text below):
Step 1: Contact your local PE Teachers (schools that feed into your program) either by email, phone, or meeting. Feel free to use the letter below when initiating contact with schools and teachers. Please add your own thoughts and information to the letter!
Step 2: Once a relationship/communication with the school or teacher has been established, the club liaison or coach should contact email@example.com to inform Rugby NorCal of the connection.
Step 3: Rugby NorCal will guide and support outreach efforts and maintaining the clubs relationship with the school.
***The club is expected to be an active participant through the outreach process. This will ensure a continued relationship with the schools and potential players, which will improve recruitment and retention.
Since USA Rugby is now requiring all Coaches to register directly through their new registration system, we will no longer post an active list of Rugby NorCal Coaches. The most accurate information for your coaching certification status can be found the new USAR Registration system once you complete your registration for the new rugby season.
As always, if you have questions or concerns, feel free to contact us in the Rugby NorCal office.
