    Our camp is designed to introduce new players to the wonderful sport of Rugby. Our sessions will focus on passing and kicking skill development, agility and evasive footwork, and explosive running. Each session will conclude with “games” when we will play touch rugby and flag rugby. We will also have a tactical kicking competition.

    The Bishop O’Dowd High School rugby program was started by Coach Ray Lehner, a social studies teacher and Freshman Football Coach, in 2010. Rugby is the fastest growing sport on the O’Dowd campus, with 80 registered players and eleven coaches. The Dragons field three sides every week: a women’s varsity, a men’s varsity and JV.

    We welcome players of all experience levels and abilities.

    Director of Rugby, Ray Lehner, boasts an extensive playing and coaching career. Lehner attended Jesuit High School in Sacramento, where he played football and rugby before going to Cal as a walk-on football player. He lettered in rugby at Cal where he won three National Championships and was named All American three years in a row. He earned four Oxford Blues in rugby while studying for his Master’s Degree in History at Kellogg College, Oxford.
    Lehner represented the USA 39 times including in the 1999 Rugby World Cup, between 1995-2001.

    His rugby coaching resume includes Cal, Oxford, the USA Under-20s and the Olympic Club San Francisco. This is his 15th year as a faculty member at O’Dowd. In addition to coaching, Lehner currently teaches Government and Economics and moderates the Outdoor Adventure Club and the Junior Statesmen of America.
